On the purchase of books

For the past couple years I’ve been complaining that I need to stop buying books as a surrogate for the knowledge in them since they just keep piling up and I don’t make the time to read them. Of course someone else said it first:

Buying books would be a good thing if one could also buy the time to read them in: but as a rule the purchase of books is mistaken for the appropriation of their contents.
